Lakeside businesses prepare for another dry year. By Dan Robertson YNN

Despite some wet weather before the holidays, Central Texas is seeing another dry spell to start the New Year, and with dry weather expected to linger through most of 2012, lake side businesses are preparing for the worst.

Doug Powell has worked on Lake Travis for 20 years. He currently manages Emerald Point Marina and has had to make a number of modifications to keep the business running. Powell says they have spent thousands of dollars extending walkways, water lines and electrical service to the docks which continue to move farther and farther from land.

“Those things are expenses that we'll never recoup," he said. "It actually is the worst I've seen it. The last time the lake was lower than this was 1963."

However, in 1963 there were only a few dozen docks on the lake. There are now more than 6,000 struggling to keep up with the departing shoreline.

"We may have to move again. We may have to move into what is the original river channel," Powell said. “We won't shut down. We may have to limit services that we're able to provide."

The river channel referenced is becoming more and more visible as the water level in Lake Travis drops. While the water in the lake may be disappearing, the water in the river channel could be as deep as 50 or 100 feet deep.

Like many Highland Lakes stakeholders, the veteran marina manager is unhappy with the way the Lower Colorado River Authority has handled the drought and agricultural demands downstream.

“We have an economic impact that is equal to or far greater than the agricultural impact and to send the majority of that water downstream is a little shortsighted," Powell said. "We have seen people who have decided that they just don't want to deal with the low water situation any longer,” the marina manager said. That's really a perception issue, not a water issue. We have lots of water. We have lots of deep water."

The LCRA has a new water management plan in the works to address the drought and agricultural releases. The plan was set for a vote this week, but has been delayed until at least February.

Lone star fugitive task force announce tip program
Needs public's help to get "Most Wanted"
AUSTIN, Texas - Robert R. Almonte, United States Marshal for the Western District of Texas, announces the start of a new program which enlists the public to assist the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force in locating and apprehending wanted fugitives. The Task Force will now have the ability to receive anonymous tips from the public via text messaging or the web.
Individuals providing information on fugitives will have the option to text in tips and remain anonymous. Information received into the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force will remain anonymous to law enforcement unless the individual chooses to self-identify.
To send a tip to the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, text keyword "Lone Star" followed by your tip to 847411 (tip411). Investigators with the Task Force will review the tip and even send a text back to the provider to ask follow up information. The provider can then choose to continue the text conversation or discontinue and terminate the communication.
The latest effort in the advancement of fugitive hunting allows the US Marshals Service led Lone Star Fugitive Task Force to have a greater reach and a quicker response in the 68 county Western District of Texas, with multi-agency task force operations in San Antonio, Austin, Waco, Del Rio, El Paso, Midland, Pecos an Alpine.
The technology available by the Minnesota based company, Citizen Observer, provides law enforcement with critical software based applications and tools to assist law enforcement and the public in effectively communicating in a safe and anonymous manner.
Regular text fees will apply. Marshal Almonte states, "This program is a great way for the community to get engaged and assist law enforcement as well as share in our overall responsibility to promote a safer environment".
